The opening scene starts with shots of a woman running through a dark some what misty wood.
It becomes clear that she is running an assault course as the clip proceeds, also An F.B.I.
agent tells her that a Mr. Crawford wants to see her and at this stage its made
clear that she is working for the F.B.I. because of the uses the directer uses
such as tracking shot to present her walking to him. She then enters some
offices where she finds newspaper clippings and pictures about a murderer
called Buffalo Bill, She is also been assigned a mission by her boss Crawford thus giving the audience only get
some basic information at this point in the film. The first
character the audience See's is Clarice Starling (the woman running at the start, The main focus of
the shots in the opening few minutes). She stands out because in the corridors
of the F.B.I. base is full of testosterone like men and because she is the week supposedly tiny, female. This is shown in the shot with her in blue and the men in red in
the lift. Compared to typical female film characters, she is unglamourous,
sweaty and manly. The music is orchestral, and is clearly written to give a sense of fear which is shown within the shots;
especially whilst she is running, However the music has less tension building
and is more serious when it comes back in from the fade. It fades slightly and
lingers whilst her and Crawford are talking, again giving a sense of unease. There is a heavy use of digetic sound as well, such as heavy breathing and gun
shots to name a few, suggesting the film will be dramatic and filled with high
tension. The titles are simple, white and small and the titles come and go
meaning a spooky fast paced thriller is about occur. This film is targeted for
persons over 18 because of the sadistic content which is shown throughout the scene.
