Evaluation 5, How did you attract/address your audience?

How did you attract/address your audience?

The opening to our film, Viet-Con, is very similar to the opening to the James Bond films. This is because they both open with an action scene (a fight scene, chase scene or shoot out) and then show the titles after. We adapted this method and followed them because we believed that our film and James Bond were very similar as they are both action films and follow the typical conventions of an action film.

First of all we used fast paced music to link with the editing and with what is happening in our film, for example we used non digetic sound during the chase scene to help aid the audience through the scene. We also used music at the end to link with the end of the scene and the introduction of the titles-we did this because we wanted our film to end with a cliffhanger and keep the audience hooked and wanting more.We did this because it follows the typical conventions of an action film as it had the traditional fast paced music and traditional action scene as the opening.

I believe the unique selling point to our film was that our film was different to others; it had a sinister setting with high intensity aspects. It also had well known actors such as Graham Burgess, James Hill and Patrick Cowley.

Overall i believe that the sinister theme and opening action scene attracted our audience as we predicted, this is because our film is very similar to James Bond and the James Bond franchise was very successful.

Evaluation 6, What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing the product?

I have learnt alot about technologies from my product(Viet-Con). I learnt about making blogs, and using the website Blogger and using all of its features effectively by using tools such as spell check to increase the quality of my blogs and the google plus button to try and expand my viewing base . I also learnt how to use new editing techniques to increase the overall quality of production towards our film for example the speed up tool effect on mine and james's eyes to give the audience a dynamic POV effect of both characters using this tool. The last main thing i learnt in regards of technology is the power of camera angles, and how important it is to look into choosing the correct setting for shooting because of the instant representation a setting can give off to the audience sub consciously and we also tried to edit a title, but we couldn't quite find the right software to use for our titles.Overall i have learnt alot about the process of creating a product through technology.

Evaluation 7, Looking back at your preliminary task (the continuity editing task), what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full product?

Looking back to your preliminary task, what do you feel that you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

I feel that I have learnt a lot in the time between filming my preliminary and my final film. I have learnt about the importance of camera angles and choosing a location which is best for my situation (action). We created our AS preliminary task film "Viet con" using adobe premiere elements because of the efficiency of Creating short clips with effective techniques such as the fade in fade out tool which was used in the begining and end of our film. I have also learnt a lot about the general conventions of films, as I have looked at many types of film during my planning so i can now pick out certain aspects and conventions of films in any clip i watch/analyse for example suspense in horror, and fast cuts in action films which we used in our clip.

Evaluation 8, What targets will you set yourself for G324 next year – when you will make a trailer?

                                                                              Targets for G324

I have set myself a range of targets for next year in G324 which i believe will let me progress further in A level Media Studies. For example to progress i will take more consideration in lighting and camera composition in the filming stage as my G321 filming process was slightly disrupted by the over toned dark lighting throughout the film which was supported by other audiences views on our opening 2 minutes,Also our camera composition was a bit shaky in areas of the filming which could be improved by using dynamic angles on the tripod to steady the camera in difficult positions.

If there was anything i would do differently it would probably be my length of blogs because although my blogs are full of quality information it is not quite as long as i hoped for which was confirmed for me when i saw the length of my class peers blogs length compared to a percentage of mine and i believe you have to have a good length throughout all of your blogs as well as quality throughout.
In my next production that i will create in G324 i will improve my film creation skills dramatically by concentrating more in the edditing proccess of the trailer as i was more focused on the blogs and acting side of hte film whereas cory was more a part of the ediiting stage then me however i did come up with the plot and sounds to use in our opening 2 minutes.

The one last thing i could improve and take into G324 with me is the higher standard of Mise-En-Sceane i and cory can use next year; when we were filming we were oblivious to the fact that we had no real dynamic costume and prop usage.this is why we are going to use props such as a gun or knife as well as a wider range of costumes for each character to improve the dynamic view for the audience which our film lacked.

Disscussions about our film

Evaluation 3, What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

What your film is similar to 'institutionally' (name some films which would be released in a similar way). You need to refer to actual company names and processes so you will need to go back to the early posts on film companies and maybe do a bit more research?

The link below shows me talking about what media institution might distribute our film and why in a directors commentary
           https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=grUTyJ00vR4
A production company is a company that produces new media, such as films and television programs. The company is also responsible for raising the money needed to fund the production. The production company can be either a small company or a larger one, selling its products to a film studio or presenting it at a studio. We would have universal distribute our film because they are a well known institution and have been successful all over the world.

The production would of been funded by indie film councils, however we had Universal to help us who funded the productions allowing us to hire top quality actors who could perform at the next level.

Films similar to our film, "Viet-Con", are the James Bond franchise. This is because both the James bond films and our film both start with an action scene before showing the opening titles-this is effective because it quickly grabs the audience and hooks them in. Another film that is similar to Viet-Con is the Jason Bourne franchise. This is because both the Jason Bourne films and our film are4 produced by the same institution, Universal. The Jason Bourne films are similar because they follow the same structure; they both are from the action genre and have a tension filled scene throughout the film.

The Jason Bourne films were very successful, especially "The Bourne Ultimatum".
The Bourne Ultimatum was produced and distributed by Universal Pictures, and had a budget of $110,000,000, was released on August 3, 2007, in North America, where it  earned $69,283,690 in ticket sales in its first weekend of release, making it the highest August opening in the U.S, breaking a record previously held by "Rush Hour 2" (2001) for the highest grossing August opening. The three films have been commercially successful and critically acclaimed and The Bourne Ultimatum won all three of its nominations for Academy Awards, winning the Best Film Editing, the Best Sound Mixing and the Best Sound Editing at the 80th Academy Awards.

Evaluation 4, Who would be the audience for your media product?

Who would be the audience for your media product?

The target audience member I chose to do was tom collier Finn represented in the photo below

Tom Collier Finn's interests in films could conspicuous action elements with a high thrill level  because of how he has portrayed himself in the photo in regards to our films target audience.Toms labelled himself with this because of what he is wearing. The Nike jumper suggests that he likes to keep a low profile and enjoys high intensity aspects of films as the Nike label shows this and hoodies are generally related to criminals who want to keep a low profile just like Cory (agent Banks) in our film thus being attracted to our film.

Tom Collier Finn's representation through our film has made us think that he shops at clothing outlets such as sports direct because of the sporting lifestyle we have labelled him as shown by the picture of Tom Collier Finn wearing Nike sports gear (hoodie) which you primarily would buy from sports direct.Another way Tom Collier Finn portrays his character to the audience is through the exterior (part you cant see) for example Tom Collier Finn looks like someone that is into high intensity power songs that are often related to sports performance because of the sports jumper indicator.Toms hair also makes the audience think that he is sophisticated because of his smart parted hair.

Overall Tom Collier Finn is the perfect example of our target audience as his appearance and probable personality show it by having a sporty conspicuous action aura about him which relates to our conspicuous action genre film.

Evaluation 2, How does my media product represent particular social groups

The character i have chosen to represent our film is the main villain (James) and the alternative character i have chosen is Stromberg (James bond villain)

Both characters have allot of similarities in multiple areas of filming production for example as you can see from the image above both characters have stern sinister faces which like James bond our film has a main antagonist villain and hero type figures throughout tour film, the characters  also both wear plain conspicuous clothing to clearly represent to the audience that they are the villains.Even though you cant hear how both characters speak they both have a sinister eastern European voice to increase the rate of stereotypes to the audience because eastern Europeans are known for being dark villains against good intentions.

However the two characters have a few differences between them, with the most obvious being the age gap between them;one being old and the other young.this means that stromberg is conventionally smarter and more wiser than James because of his experience, this can be conveyed through the different ages.Another difference would be in the clip James only has a couple of people working for him where as stromberg has a whole 50 man team working for him suggesting stromberg is more powerful and bigger than James because of his increased amount of workers compared to James.

Film Production Mark

The mark you received in moderation for the production of your film is Level 3 = 34/60.

Target: Your film titles are basic. You need to include titles throughout, actors, actresses, editor, producer and the director (in this order). Include music at the beginning - even just a double bass in the background to create tension.

Evaluation 1, analaysis of our film Viet-Con through screen grabs of edditing

Viet-Con
In screen shot 1 the image shows James and pat portrayed as the evil villain and bodyguard walking to where the main stand off will be with titles showing the audience who is who as the image is showing the backs of the characters making it hard for the audience to recognise them.our films setting is based in a dark and eerie setting in leatherhead right next to the swan centre car park, the image show James and pat walking down the ramp moving closer to the main stand off scene.the image shows James wearing a long reefer jacket to represent a traditional boss or leader and pat in a leather jacket to show the audience he is the bodyguard and worker of the pair.our camera work for this scene was also well directed because of they way we shot a mid shot of the backs of the villains to give an effect of conspicuousness towards the characters,we made this shot lighter and more dynamic as it was to dark to show the audience.

screen shot 2 Shows me,  Connor walking towards the main stand off scene with one of the two bodyguards graham walking along side him to make sure he does not escape and cause trouble, the camera shot used is very effective because it is a mid angle and shows a dynamic point of view (POV) shot of James the villain looking at the current situation.

Screenshot 3 is a mid shot that shows the two henchman (Patrick Cowley & Graham Burgess) with the main protagonist between them (Connor Moreton). This suggests that Connor has been taken to meet with James but not by choice and again shows the binary opposition between the characters. This creates more and more enigmas (which is exactly what we wanted) and keeps the audience on their toes.

Screenshot 4 is a long shot that shows the start to the chase scene with Connor sprinting away with Patrick in pursuit. This indicates the genre to the audience allowing them to know what else is to come. Our film did follow the typical conventions of an action film with a chase scene leading to a final confrontation but with a twist. The lighting of this scene worked to perfection as we adjusted it through the use of editing to highlight Connor and make him the centre of the scene, this shows that this is his moment in the film and also suggests that he is getting away easily as Patrick has been blacked out.

Screenshot 5 shows our institution. We chose universal because we believed that they suited our film best and we knew that they can make any low budget film a success because of the notoriety they have with creating top blockbuster films. For example universal have created films such as ride along, jaws,Jurassic park and Inglorious bastards which all has aspects of our film, which is good because the company can advertise and market our film to the right target audience as they know the right audience proven by there previous films created.
Screenshot 6 is a low angle shot that shows the two henchman with the main protagonist between them. We used our editing skills to highlight Connor and make him look superior to the others with the camera aimed directly at him from a low angle- this makes him look more important compared to the other characters. It also shows Connor a little closer with the two henchman a little behind him-this was to show dominance and make it look like the henchman are ready just in case Connor tries to try anything.

Screenshot 7 is a close up shot of James Hill (the main antagonist) exchanging a bit of dialogue with Connor. We first used torches from our phones to add lighting to James because it was very dark, however when it came to editing this proved to be aggravating; it meant that I couldn't highlight only James or get rid of the lighting already on him. It didn't seem to be too bad in this scene but it did become a problem for the later scenes.

Screenshot 8 shows the title of our film. It has gold text in bold on a black background-this makes it easily seen and catches the eye of our audience.this is effective because it gives the audience an insight of what our clip will be about, for example bold gold writing on a black background suggests to the audience that our clip will be about high stakes because of the element of gold and sinisrterism because of the mat black background.our title can relate to the film hunger games because the title of this film is a bright colour of orange and red (fire) and the film relates to adventure and mystery which attracts to our audience.

Screenshot 9 is an over the shoulder shot showing two characters exchanging a few lines of dialogue. The scene is blacked to create enigmas and make the audience wonder who the characters are. The scene first fades in and then a few lines are said before it fades out with the dialogue continuing over the scene-this suggests its a flashback and a bit of a back story for the characters and helps the audience to understand the situation that happens later.

Casino Royale opening sceane

Casino Royale opening two minutes analysis

In the opening scene of the film the first thing the audience see is James Bond talking on a secret frequency to another special agent suggesting something big is about to happen because of the secretiveness of the communication. The directer uses a pan shot of the African target in Madagascar before showing the audience an establishing shot of inner city Madagascar while using the feature of telling the audience where the scene is set with audio writing because of the unrecognisable location,Once the special agent makes a communication error with James bond the main antagonist the target then scampers away pushing anything out of its wake suggesting to the audience he is either incredibly important or has committed something huge giving the audience a sense of anticipation. The mise-en-scene of the clothes they are wearing are raggedy and light weight suggesting they are in a tropical climate and are ready to pounce to obtain the target or runaway quickly from the illegal cock fighting ring (which could be part of the plot). The scene then turns into a full on chase with no timidness or caution with the director using tracking shots to capture the chase as realistic for the audience as possible with both antagonists climbing and clambering through nooks and cranny's not stopping till they reach the end point of a building crane in the middle of the city giving the abidance suspense, danger and fear for the audience with them battling to the death until you find out James Bond needs to keep him alive while managing to keep himself alive before the target athletically jumps of the crane down to the city with James Bond following.

Codes And Conventions Of A Romance

Codes And Conventions Of A Romance

codes and conventions of action films

Analysis of the first 2 minutes of the raiders of the lost ark

in the first 2 minutes of the film it starts of with an establishing shot of an exotic jungle to set the scene for the audience and sub plot of the film by giving a sense of adventure. Then the antagonist character Indiana Jones walks in front of the mid shot showing the audience who is the leader of the group. The directer then cuts to a discover slashing leaves to get to a barely made out relic symbol which instantly gives the audience a sense of fear because of the way the discoverer sprints away from the relic which could be a recognised warning, and as the group realises what he has run away in fear from,Indiana Jones (the main antagonist) shrugs of the warning by looking at it and turning away from it in the shrubbery. The directer then does a final impact shot where he has a close up on a arrow in a tree with the group walking timidly past the tree suggesting the realisation of what the group are walking into, this gives the audience the effect of death which the arrow represents,it could also represent that colonies have driven out or killed trespassers in the position the group are in the south American jungle.

Lord Of The Rings Analysis

                                                            Lord of the Rings analysis

The opening scene of this film starts off with Smeagal (one of the main characters throughout before the ring cursed him) and Deagol in a Serene and jolly fishing scene where the camera does a birds eye view shot, moving slowly towards the main characters this gives the sense of calm and peace having a environment/Establishment shot to place the setting. This opening 10 seconds gives a good insight of the contrast between how calm everything is and how the ring destroys everything in its wake, no matter how spiritual or peaceful.

The directer then uses shots at a POV level to allow you to real engage and become one of the fictual characters, this is influential as after the two antagonistic characters have talked civilly Deagol gives the signs that he has caught a rather large fish by the way he struggles and cuts straight away from the conversation with Smeagol and suddenly gets dragged into the river which gives the assumption that deagol is too proud to let go off the rod until his human instinct kicks in too want to breath, leaving Smeagol worried about his so called friend.almost immediately after deagol lets go the director cuts to Smeagol showing him trying to scamper in the water giving the visual affect of danger, something shiny and out of place caught Deagol's eye it was the ring that destroys them all which was attempted to be disposed in the last film but failed showing the audience what is inevitably coming up through the film.once he clawed the ring from the bed of the sea having no regard for the soil in his hand or need to breath he scampers up onto the boat giving a relieved Smeagol the chance to pull him to safety.

Once Smeagol finds out deagol has this ring the directer uses medium to POV shots to help the audience visualise Smeagol and Deagols point of view as the two battle it out over this ring leaving the friendship and there most probable lifetime respect behind them Smeagol eventually strangles Deagol leaving him all the power in middle earth in his hands which then cuts back out over the land and uses long shots to show the audience the final piece of what Smeagol now has and how this Ring and storyline changes everyone and everything in a dark and sadistic way.

Diary Of Editing

                                                                    Diary Of Editing

Friday 31st January 2014-Thursday 13th February 2014

The editing of our did get underway until this date which is much later than other groups because we had 3 scenes to film and me and Cory decided to concentrate on our blog tasks before we started the editing process as we saw this was a more efficient way to complete our media course. Our footage was a bit pixelated at the start because of the amount of light intensity we had to change in the rendering process but managed to edit the scene in a way it isn't noticeable to the audience. At the start of the editing process Cory was able to piece together all of our clips and place them in order, once he finished this he went over all scenes that needed light and toned the intensity up.

The tools we used on adobe premier elements was the cut and speed up tool which is very useful in our clip as the film is about fast paced animatics throughout.

Diary Of Filming

                                                                     Diary Of Filming

Friday 20th December 2013

Today was the first day we started filming at the location of the swan centre leatherhead in the Christmas holidays because this is really the only time all 5 of us could meet.Once we all met up at the swan centre shops we set up our camera with the relevant placement and started to film at the swan centre top deck car park to film the walking scene and swan centre apartments car park slope for the first stand off scene, this was easier than the top deck scene as there was light already provided on the side of the building ( this took us about two hours over 2 days).

Sunday 5th January 2014

On day two of filming we met at Sainsburys at the lower deck of the swan centre at about 4 which means enough time to film in dusk and darkness which was decided when we filmed in the rainy dark conditions the day before, from there we immediately started to film the last part of the first stand off and chase scene in the extreme rain which was good because it created sinisterism and a heightened sense of emotions for the audience such as importance and intensity.
After Agent Banks reaches the meeting spot where the two henchmen and Connor arrives (with James the leader arriving shortly after) he then makes a dramatic entrance jumping off the wall,we had to re do this scene 3 times as he was struggling to jump off the wall so Cory gave his mysterious outfit to graham (henchmen #1)to do the stunt. We then ended filming in dark and extremely rainy conditions on top of the swan centre which made a brilliant film conclusion location and atmosphere, this took 3 hours because of the extra scene we had to do and the finishing off of the other scene which we filmed on the 20th of December.

Thursday 16th January 2014

On this day the only part of filming left was Cory(Agent Banks) and James(leader) filming the mysterious talk and flashback in the drama studio;this was a good location for this because of the silhouette effect it gives to the scene as it is a dark room and designed for acting. As i was not need i carried on with editing the rest of our opening two minuets at lunch time.

Practice Titles

Practice Titles

As the first image shows the practice titles i chose at the start was a gold title with a gold trim and white body because if we used this style of title it would show the audience what our clip is about;class and power, this will appeal to the audience because they can relate the titles to the clip as the gold colour gives an effect of wealth and power so the audience knows the clip is a high stakes action film.

My second image shows my final practice title as a gold trim with white and silver body because the audience can relate the practice titles and our clip even better than the other image as this practice title has more relevance to our clip by me creating a darker sinister side to the title (created by the darker silver trim) and conspicuous aura it creates by doing so; this is what will attract the audience the target audience.

Influences To Support Our Clip Creation

                                                        Documenting Influences of our clip

In our clip we used a vast amount of extreme (high and low) and dynamic camera angles because of the incitement it can bring to our target audience, for example during the start of the chase scene we set up a low angle shot of Connor (villain),Pat and Graham (Bodyguards) running towards the corner of the wall were the camera was looking up;as soon as the characters reached the camera it panned quickly to show clearly how far they have run, they are together and were they are heading towards (giving a greater interactive aspect to the audience by feeling as if they were in on the action). The Last camera angle i am going to express on is our over the shoulder scene of Cory (agent Banks) looking down on the antagonist characters from a balcony.

Target Audience Research

                                                             Audience Research Summary

The audience we chose our film to target was audiences that generally enjoy crime, action, sincerity and comedy all the great aspects for a typical male audience. Our film will appeal pro dominantly to the male audience because of our use of low lighting and unadulterated stand off action; this will attract the male audience by using scenes such as the chase one and by having a low lighting sinister atmosphere throughout the film attracting an older male audience,we know this as our questionnaire results show how popular our clips category is to the target audience. However other audiences such as 16+ females because of the typical reason for a love interest or figure which could be Connor as he is meant to signify a person that is accepted as a person which is fit(hence the Hawaiian shirt with buttons undone in the opening two minutes to represent fitness).this is why females can be attracted to this film.

Our film is a clip that aims to appeal to all older audiences that is a crime action film, other films that appeal to similar audiences are sin city for its low lighting dynamic feel to the film, lock stock and two smoking barrels for its very similar unadulterated extreme close up take on action which symbolises what our film is trying to achieve through the target audience, other similar films could include the dark knight rises which is similar by its sinister criminalise look on a film and kick ass 2 for the films constant aspect of merging comedy with crime-action.

Theses are the reasons we have given for a specific target audience of older males and possibly females which is stated above.

Costume Research 2

                                                                         Costume Research

The main protagonist and antagonist could be wearing suit to show their superiority over the the other characters. The main protagonist could have a grey or navy suit like the one Daniel Craig uses in the James Bond films (shown in the image to the side).

The main antagonist could have a black suit (shown in the image to the left) which would follow the typical costumes of an action villain-however we may have the main antagonist wearing a light coloured suit such as a cream suit (shown in the image below) to subvert the typical stereotypes and so that he is not easily spotted which could shock the audience and create suspense.

Props Research 2

                                                              Props Research

Guns And Knives

We may use guns such as pistols as they are the usual weapon for the main protagonist, an example of this would be James Bond as he always has his traditional Walther PPK. We could also include more destructive and exciting weapons such as machine guns or grenades to create explosions. The guns would be spray painted black to look more realistic and also hidden from the sight the enemies. We could also use a knife as back up to the gun for stealth scenes or close quarters.

Earpiece
We could use an earpiece to allow the main protagonist to be updated about his missions and follow his instructions, the villains may also have earpieces in order to communicate with each other. The ear pieces would have no cables and look professional as if it were a real prop from a James Bond film.
BriefcaseA briefcase could be used in order to create an enigma. It would either be black or dark brown which would look old and stylish. The briefcase could contain anything from money to weapons which makes the audience question and wonder why it has been used.

Mobile Phone
We may have someone with a phone to show that he is wealthy and maybe a business man that is distanced from the characters as they have ear pieces. The main antagonist could use it to show that he is more superior to the rest as he is different to them.

Brainstorm of the opening 2 minutes of my film

Brainstorm Of The Opening 2 Minutes Of My Film

Online Tutorials

                                                                      Online Tutorials
I used this tutorial to speed up a part of my film to create a fast paced effect and make it seem like the audience are rushing down to the characters. I used this in the opening scene when the camera quickly pans down to the characters on the ground. I clicked the time stretch tool and then cut the clip to speed it up and shorten the original clip.
I used this tutorial to slow down one of the scenes to give a dramatic effect as the opening was coming to an end. I used this in the ending scene when the climax comes to a close. I again used the time stretch tool but instead of cutting the clip I extended it and created a slow motion effect.

Animatic Storyboard

Animatic Storyboard

These pictures create our animatic storyboard to show the target audience what happens in our opening 2 minutes.our aim of the clip is to persuade the audience to carry on watching our film by enticing them with action, crime and anticipation from the outset. As the pictures show, the clip focus's on dynamic camera angles and close ups of the main characters to show the audience there expressions no matter how subtle. Another great aspect of our film is the low lighting we use which allows the audience to relate to the dark criminality of our film, because of this i believe our film has all the right features of a high quality film.
